Advancements such as LiDAR and drone‑based data collection are shaping the next chapter of that evolution. These tools enhance accuracy, improve safety and accelerate project delivery, giving surveyors new ways to gather meaningful spatial data while reducing risk in the field. 

A New Era of Surveying

Historically, surveying required crews to physically access project sites and manually collect data points — often over extended periods of time. Today, LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) enables surveyors to capture millions of data points in a single scan, producing highly detailed 3D models of real‑world environments with remarkable efficiency. 

While the tools have changed, the mission remains the same: delivering reliable, precise and actionable spatial information. Modern survey technologies simply make that mission easier to achieve — and often in ways that are safer and more efficient for field teams.

  • Safer: Reduces the need for personnel to enter hazardous or hard‑to‑reach areas such as levees, bridge structures, unstable terrain or industrial sites.

Cagatay “Ty” Atmaca is a geophysicist with more than 15 years of experience in applied geophysics and three years of specialized experience in drone-based geophysical surveying. He has led several drone geophysics projects focused on locating orphan wells in Arizona and California, utilizing advanced systems such as the IF1200A drone platform equipped with the MagArrow II magnetometer.

Ty has played a key role in integrating drone technology with traditional geophysical methods to improve the efficiency and safety of subsurface investigations. His work has supported major environmental initiatives by helping identify buried orphan wells and assess potential methane emissions. In addition to orphan well investigations, he has also applied drone-based geophysics to landfill studies and environmental site assessments, using high-resolution aerial data to support site characterization and monitoring. ҰƵapp continues to demonstrate its leadership in advancing America’s next generation of clean energy infrastructure through its support of the Aurora Powerhouse project at Idaho National Laboratory (INL). The project, developed by and advanced under the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Reactor Pilot Program, represents a key milestone in deploying innovative nuclear technologies that will strengthen U.S. energy security and resilience.

On September 22, leaders from government, industry, and the clean energy sector gathered at INL to celebrate the project’s groundbreaking—a moment that underscored growing national momentum behind advanced nuclear energy.

As part of the early-stage development, ҰƵapp’ technical experts provided preliminary geotechnical investigation and on-site testing services, which helped inform the design and licensing efforts, in addition to supporting critical inputs for site development and regulatory approvals. Q&A: As a Survey Instrumentation Specialist and Project Manager, Piotr Jaszczak understands how Automated Monitoring Total Stations (AMTS) enhance precision and efficiency in complex landscapes. We sat down with Piotr to learn more about the use of this evolving technology.

In the summer of 2021, a Seattle Convention Center project team celebrated a major milestone with the completion of the .

Completed over three years, this $1.9-billion project involved the installation of 21,000 tons of steel, effectively doubling the venue’s capacity.

The project also revitalized four city blocks with new sidewalks, lighting, retail spaces, and landscaping, enhancing the pedestrian experience while contributing to a more vibrant downtown Seattle.

A key factor behind the project’s success was setting up Automated Monitoring Total Stations (AMTS) throughout the project site. These surveying tools provide high precision and real-time data for enhanced safety.

Tell us about your role in the Seattle Convention Center Expansion project.

My primary role involved overseeing the installation and operation of Automated Monitoring Total Stations (AMTS) to ensure the stability of the projects extensive shoring system. This included setting up the equipment, calibrating it, and monitoring the data to detect any shifts or movements that could indicate potential issues.

 

What exactly are AMTS and how do they work?

An AMTS is a high-tech instrument used to monitor the stability and movement of structures with extreme precision.

It functions much like a highly accurate land surveying total station mounted on a sturdy stand. The process involves placing reflective targets on the monitored objects and taking measurements at regular intervals — sometimes as frequently as every 15 minutes.

The data collected provides real-time insights into any shifts or deformations, allowing us to take immediate action if needed.

 

How do AMTS enhance precision measurement and safety in construction projects?

AMTS significantly improve precision by providing redundancy and continuous, real-time data. This allows us to detect even the smallest movements or shifts, which might go unnoticed with traditional surveying methods. The real-time aspect is crucial for safety as it enables early detection of potential structural issues, allowing for quick intervention to prevent accidents or structural failures.

 

What are some other benefits of using AMTS over traditional surveying methods?

The primary benefits include higher precision, real-time data collection, multiple readings per day, obtaining readings in 24/7 regime, and enhanced safety. Traditional methods often require manual measurements, which can be time-consuming and less accurate.

AMTS automate this process, ensuring consistent and accurate data while freeing up human resources for other critical tasks. Additionally, the continuous monitoring capability means that we can react faster to any detected anomalies, thereby mitigating risks more effectively.

 

Can you share some examples of how AMTS have been used in different types of projects?

AMTS can be used to monitor wall deformations, structural settlement, and shoring stability. In tunnel construction, AMTS can monitor convergence to ensure the tunnel walls are stable. In bridge construction, they can track any shifts in the structure that might indicate a need for reinforcement. They’re also useful in mining operations to monitor surface settlement and ensure the safety of workers.

 

What makes AMTS technology durable and suitable for different environmental conditions?

Units are designed to withstand harsh weather conditions. They typically have an IP65 or higher rating, meaning they are resistant to dust and water.

They can also operate in a wide temperature range from -20°C to +50°C — and these systems often come with battery backups and can be powered by solar panels, making them reliable even in remote or hard and dangerous to access locations.

 

How does the integration online accessible database improve the functionality of AMTS?

It allows AMTS to analyze data more intelligently and predict potential issues before they become significant problems. These functionalities help identify patterns and trends in the data that may not be immediately obvious to analysts using small sample datasets. Predictiveness is critical for proactive maintenance and ensuring long-term structural integrity.

 

What advice would you give to clients looking to incorporate AMTS into their projects?

First, talk with us to ensure we all have a clear understanding of your project’s specific needs and how AMTS can address them. Continuous monitoring done by an experienced personnel is essential to get accurate and reliable data. Lastly, always stay open to the latest advancements in the technology and out of the box solutions to maximize the benefits for your project.

 

How do you see the future of geospatial surveying and precision measurement evolving with advancements in technology?

The future is incredibly promising. With advancements in technology, data processing, and remote sensing techniques, we can expect even greater accuracy and efficiency.

These technologies will enable more automated and smarter surveying solutions, reducing human error and increasing safety. I believe we’ll see more integration of these tools in various industries, making them standard practice in construction, mining, and infrastructure projects.

ҰƵapp Senior Civil Engineer/On-Site Project Manager Clinton McClure shares insights into Chicago’s Project Coordination Office, which he’s been a part of since 2012.

The ‘Building a New Chicago’ program, a $7-billion infrastructure investment announced by former Mayor Rahm Emanuel in 2012, generated an influx of transportation projects for the Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT), spurring new innovations in the process.

To keep development on schedule, CDOT officials founded the Project Coordination Office (PCO), an internal management agency that could administer work between utility companies and other agencies that help improve the public right of way.

Along with connecting various stakeholders to improve information sharing, the PCO enables efforts to improve city infrastructure and reduces waste and duplication to boost savings across public and private agencies by an average of $22.8 million a year.

It consists of engineers and planners from prime consultant Collins Engineers and its various sub-consultants, including , an ҰƵapp Company, where Clinton McClure has amassed 11 years of experience.

The PCO coordinates infrastructure projects across Chicago by gathering information from public and private utility companies about their capital improvement programs. Personnel are able to coordinate projects with special event planners like the Lollapalooza music festival and the Chicago Marathon hosted by Bank of America.

This includes using maps to identify areas where multiple projects will take place at the same time and communicating with those agencies to develop a succession of projects that minimizes the amount of new asphalt or concrete that is removed by future work. Projects are then recorded in a Memorandum of Understanding that all parties sign before construction takes place.

This ensures that all underground work takes place on a street before final asphalt resurfacing begins, allowing the road surface to remain undisturbed for longer than it would have been otherwise, saving both material and labor costs to the utility or agency that can be allocated towards future construction.

CDOT has recognized the value that the PCO has in promoting cooperation among various stakeholders and driving efficiency in infrastructure improvements.

“[The PCO] has improved collaboration with other agencies and service providers within the public right of way, helping save taxpayers millions of dollars while minimizing disruption for residents and businesses,” said Gia Biagi, a previous CDOT Commissioner. “With a busy construction season around the corner, we look forward to continuing to find ways to improve and streamline the process of delivering infrastructure improvements across Chicago.”[1]

And TranSmart has helped the PCO achieve these improvements, providing support for both project coordination as well as technical review of construction drawings submitted to CDOT for permit approval and GIS analysis of public data for planned construction projects, permits, and recently resurfaced streets.

The PCO, which some records list as the first of its kind in the U.S., has saved the City $251 million due to its coordination efforts. Today the PCO continues to provide swift management of many infrastructure improvements that help boost the quality of life in Chicago.

AUSTIN, Texas, June 30, 2020 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — ҰƵapp Technical Consultants, Inc. (Nasdaq: ATCX) (“ҰƵapp” or the “Company”), a leading provider of professional testing, inspection, engineering, program management and consulting services, announced today that the ҰƵapp/ATC Baton Rouge Office has been selected by East Baton Rouge Parish to design the Sherwood Forest Drive Extension project.   The approximately $30 M, 2-mile greenfield project is part of the East Baton Rouge Parish’s $1B Road Rehabilitation and Mobility Enhancement Program known as MOVEBR.  ҰƵapp will provide Road/Bridge Design, Geotechnical Design, Flood Plain Analysis (to include fill mitigation and detention design), Hydrologic & Hydraulic Modeling, Drainage Design, Green Infrastructure Planning and Design, Complete Streets, Utility Coordination, Subsurface Utility Engineering (Level A), Topographic Survey, Right-of-Way Survey and Mapping, Traffic Engineering and Design.

The Sherwood Forest Drive Extension project will be delivered in two phases.  In Phase I – Preliminary Engineering, the ҰƵapp team will develop multiple corridor alignment alternatives analyzing each’s impacts on key analysis criteria such as environmental, wetland, drainage and traffic impacts while implementing resilient design strategies to solve flood plain and detention issues. Phase I will also include implementing the latest technology in LiDAR aerial drone surveying coupled with traditional topographic surveying to produce accurate real-world data for use in the preliminary engineering tasks.  Upon completion of the design study and identification of the final corridor alignment, which will take approximately 18 months, ҰƵapp will negotiate Phase 2 of the project which will include the final design components of Road/Bridge design, drainage, two new intersections, Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE) Services, pedestrian access and sustainable green infrastructure.

The corridor encompasses many environmental and utility challenges to be considered including environmental wetlands, residential and commercial right-of-way, oil and gas pipelines, and transmission lines.  In addition, the entire area falls within the Comite River watershed which was inundated during the parish-wide 2016 flood event and as a result, the entire project area is classified as Flood Zone AE.  Implementing resilient design strategies will require extensive upstream and downstream watershed modeling, detention modeling, and flood plain fill mitigation.  This extensive use hydrologic and hydraulic modeling will be the first of its kind for the MOVEBR program and will likely be used for any future development in the area and incorporated into a larger parish-wide master drainage plan initiative
